In general, when one speaks of the burial or tomb of Jesus, two things can be distinguished:
- The church where Jesus’ tomb is found, Mount Calvary (where he died), the stone where he was anointed before being buried and the cistern where his cross was found three centuries later. The religious significance given to the Holy Sepulcher within Christianity is of the utmost importance, for within this enclosure lies Calvary, where Jesus Christ died, and his tomb, where, according to the Gospels, he was resurrected on the third day of his death. For this reason the tomb is the main center of the basilica. The chapel containing it, in the middle of the so-called “Rotonda” at the head of the Greek choir, is known as the ἀνάστασις (Greek for “resurrection”).
