Jesus Praying In The Garden
The story of the agony of Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane is one of the deepest and most mysterious of Bible passages. It contains things that no man can explain satisfactorily. To study it, well they could repeat the words God told Moses when he appeared in the burning bush: “Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon you stand is holy ground” (Ex 3: 5) . Undoubtedly, the study of this passage should lead us to worship rather than analysis.
Here we see the Lord waged the final battle against sin, but for some reason, this battle is presented in two acts: Gethsemane and Golgotha. This leads us to ask why it was necessary to go through Gethsemane? Do not they could have avoided such a painful episode in his life? But throughout these studies we will see that it was in Gethsemane where the Lord made the decision to go to the Cross, while at Calvary was where materialized.
“And they came to a place called Gethsemane”
Like many other nights, Jesus left the city and went to a nearby olive grove that was known as “Gethsemane”, which means “olive press”, probably because he had been or still was an olive press.
There the Lord used to meet with his disciples during his visits to the capital, looking away from the crowds that constantly pressured and so have a private teaching time with them (Luke 22:39) (John 18: 1-2). Therefore, the place was well known to Judas also, who as we shall see later, would soon go with a squad to arrest Jesus. While we should not forget that if Jesus found there that night, it was because there was no thought of escape, although he knew perfectly all the machinations of Judas, as had previously expressed clearly.
But this time, the place where Jesus had so many beautiful talks with his disciples, now would become the scene of his agony before going to the cross.
